Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational Interviewing, developed by Miller and Rollnick, is a therapeutic approach widely used in the addiction field. It is a person centred therapy which aims at increasing motivation in order to change your behaviour. People who have an addiction problem usually have underlying difficulties such as anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences, stress. Motivational Interviewing focuses on understanding the ambivalence towards stopping addictive behaviours. MI teaches psychological techniques to manage the addiction.

A Motivational Interviewing approach is based on communication and explores the preoccupations and needs of the patient as well as the underlying symptoms and problems. Motivational Interviewing aims at helping the patient to increase the determination and the motivation required to make the necessary decision for recovery therefore overcoming addictive behavior.
